Q1: When did Minamata disease occur?
A1: The first case of Minamata disease was reported in 1956.
Commentary:
Officially, two sisters aged 5 and 2 living in Minamata City were the first
patients.
They had dyskinesia and generalized convulsions, as well as symptoms such
as dystonia of their hands and feet and sudden fits of screaming.
Actually, some patients seemed to have appeared earlier, and out of 54
patients identified in that year, 17 had already died by the time the sisters
became ill.
